Description: ''Streetwise,'' a study of young teen-age vagrants living in Seattle, began as an article (by Cheryl McCall) and photo-essay (by Mary Ellen Mark) in Life magazine. As a feature film, produced by Miss McCall and directed by Martin Bell, it still has the quality of a photo-essay observing a number of homeless teen- agers without structuring a narrative or otherwise commenting on what is seen. This shapelessness, and the unacknowledged presence of the camera in what seem to be small, intimate moments, would hurt the film if its interview footage were not so unmistakably authentic and, at times, so wrenching. ''Streetwise'' has its touches of sensationalism, but much of it is all too real.

One of the film's young subjects is Tiny, a 14-year-old prostitute who says that, for all she knows, one of the older men she ''dates'' (e.g., visits briefly in his automobile) could be her father. Tiny's mother, a waitress with a drinking problem, has married a man her daughter doesn't get along with; ''stepdads'' are a big problem for several of the girls who are interviewed. The camera follows Tiny to visit her mother on the job and have a free hamburger, and then goes along on several visits home. The mother, who looks not much older than Tiny but a great deal wearier, thinks her daughter's prostitution is ''just a phase'' she will outgrow.

One of the things that gives ''Streetwise'' its impact is an event the film makers could not have anticipated: the suicide of one of the half-dozen subjects they studied most closely. The film does not overemphasize the sordidness of street life or the bleak prospects it holds for these people's futures (if anything, many of the interviewees are captured at the height of their energy and bravado). But the sight of a 16-year-old's funeral attended by one parent, three social workers and just about no one else is as sad and moving a commentary as any other that could have been offered.

Like Salvador Allende, Patricio Guzmán has dedicated his life to Chile, his country. It seems entirely normal, then, that he might consecrate a documentary to his political hero, martyr of September 11, 1973. More than a simple portrait, it is an inspired film in which Guzmán manages to take a considerable distance in relation to the subject. Taking archive images, survivor’s testimonies and a never-before-heard political analysis, he shows the enthusiasm that Allende’s victory in 1970 represented for an entire people, without eluding to the errors in judgment or, above all, showing the political and economical vise grip in which Allende found himself imprisoned. A very rich film, at times quite emotive, that breaks the taboo of silence about a beacon personality of the twentieth century.

Description: Filmmaker, writer, poet, literary theorist, educator, musical composer, and (un/non)ethnographer, Trinh T. Minh-ha builds much of her work around the theme of the "other" (the persona one considers him/herself to be in relation to), challenging cultural theorists' traditional notions of the subject or/subjected duality. She performed three year's worth of ethnographic field research in West Africa the Research Expedition Program of the University of California, Berkeley. This fieldwork led in part to her first film, Reassemblage, which was filmed in Senegal and released in 1982.

Trinh's views on traditional ethnographic documentaries are hinted at in one of her voice-overs that occurs early in the film. She states: "I do not intend to speak about/Just speak near by." The film is a montage of fleeting images from Senegal and includes almost no narration, save for the occasional statements by Trinh, none of which attempt to assign meaning to the seconds-long scenes. Where one expects an omniscient, scientific voice to override the moving pictures in order to overlay a mapping schema of "meaning," there is sometimes music, sometimes no sound, sometimes Trinh assigning a reality or sign to the culture it hopes to "know" by viewing a movie, she refuses to make the film be "about" something, refuses to speak about the images, and denies the hopeful observer the opportunity to record, categorize, and save an("other") culture. The viewer is left with a sense of disorientation, in that no meaning was assigned to any of the images in the film, and yet the viewer's mind was constantly expecting such designations.

The group followed is a Seattle, Washington chapter of the New England Role Playing Organization (NERO), one of many live-action role-playing organizations in the US. Players create their own identities selecting from a variety of races and classes, similar to Dungeons and Dragons or World of Warcraft. Participants dress up and are involved as either player characters, non-player character, or Plot Members.

It premiered at the Cinequest Film Festival 17 in 2007, where it received the Audience Award for Best Documentary, and was also featured in the Seattle International Film Festival.

Jimmy Mirikitani is an 80-year-old Japanese American artist living homeless on the streets of New York City. He makes and sells drawings of cats and other things. Linda Hattendorf, the filmmaker, takes notice and starts filming this strange but somehow remarkable man. He holds a grudge lasting over half a century against the United States government for holding him and thousands of others at the Tule Lake internment camp during WWII, and we discover that every day he also draws picture after picture depicting his memories of camp life. 10 minutes into the film, it seems as if this story has nowhere to develop: Jimmy, for all his energy, is an old man, justifiably bitter, and unlikely to break from his cycle of anger. But the year is 2001, and while the distant past refuses to fade for Jimmy, another event is about to intrude into both his and Linda's lives. When she finds him coughing in the dark as the dust from the collapsed World Trade Center towers descends over his neighborhood, she has to make a choice, and it is that choice that throws open the world of the film wider and more beautifully than most films can even imagine.

To me, this is the first truly transcendent piece of art to emerge since motion picture media was digitally democratized and filmmaking became an art available to all. The use of small no-budget digital cameras allowed The Cats of Mirikitani to become one of the most personal, funny, and touching films I've ever seen. But this film also manages the noble task of telling the story of two of the most transformative events in American history - the internment of Japanese-Americans in camps during the Second World War, and the similar fear and disorientation that accompanied the attack on the World Trade Center and its aftermath. Jimmy Mirikitani is the charismatic, fiesty, and instantly wonderful real-life character that bridges these two events and provides characteristic critique and clarity on the full scope of the history that he has lived. And Linda Hattendorf is the New Yorker from Ohio who had the presence of mind to switch on a camera and keep it running - and not only that, but also the necessary compassion to risk her film and her story to do the right thing. For it, she, Jimmy, and the rest of us were rewarded with a story that exceeds all expectations.

Shot for next to nothing and edited in a crisp, expert manner, this is the rare documentary that discovers life in a state of disrepair but leaves it in a state of joy. Reflexively, the act of making the film becomes a way of comprehending the past as well as transforming the future for the better, and for this The Cats of Mirikitani deserves far more praise than it has yet received. It has the vision and the courage not to simply wallow in angst, despair, and ennui, but to blaze a trail out of it. Repeat viewings only enhance the wonder one must have for the film and the filmmaker, as well as for Jimmy, his art, and his story. A must see whether you love or hate documentary; this film will win you over, and in the words of a more prominent critic than I, "may well wipe you out."

The London Underground (BBC)

The London Underground map is a classic 20th Century design and has a great history of its own. It was devised in the 1930s and yet is still used today with few modifications. Harry Beck, the designer of the map in 1933, was only paid five guineas for his original job. The only official acknowledgment he received is a plaque at Finchley Station. The poor man worked on it throughout his life, trying to improve and modify it, and that's all the thanks he got... a plaque at Finchley Central Station.

His map was originally rejected by the powers that be at London Transport ¹, mainly because it was not geographical. Indeed he enlarged the central areas and compressed the outer areas to make the whole complex map clearer. The map proved to be a great hit with the public and most other major cities (including New York, St Petersburg and Sydney) used his map as the basis for their own underground maps.

Jisoe - Australian Graffiti Documentary that follows the life of Justin Hughes

Jisoe is a compelling observational documentary that exposes the underbelly of
Australian culture rarely explored by mainstream cinema. Set in Melbourne’s harsh
underground graffiti scene this provocative film exposes for the first time how this
international culture has carved its own identity in Australian suburbia.

The film is centred around the life of Justin Hughes (aka Jisoe), a young graffiti artist and
part of an emerging Australian underclass. The story swings between Justin’s gritty daily
existence of painting trains and smoking drugs, to sharing intimate and emotional
snapshots of Justin’s life including the birth of his new baby, the degradation of his
relationship and his eventual mental breakdown.

Although the film is set with a backdrop of ambitious graffiti art and a soundtrack of
original local Hip Hop, Jisoe is much more than just a portrait of the Melbourne graffiti
scene. It is moreover a candid human story that challenges the audience to consider an
emerging Australian underclass who are both angry and disillusioned with their place in
society. Told with an honesty only to match the honesty of the subject, Jisoe is social
commentary at it’s best.
